Why you might still struggle to hear in noise – even with expensive hearing aids.

A recent real-world case at our clinic proves why the method your audiologist uses to fit your device matters just as much as the technology itself.
Many providers rely on computer automation to set up hearing aids, but this shortcut often leaves patients struggling in background noise.

The Pitfall of the “Automatic” Setup
A patient came to us wearing premium, high-tech hearing aids fitted by another provider. Despite the expensive devices, he still found it incredibly exhausting to follow conversations in busy environments.
His previous provider had used an automated computer program to estimate his settings. When we ran advanced diagnostic checks on his devices, we discovered why he was struggling:

  • Distorting Loudness: The automated system had turned up certain pitches far too high.
  • Missing Clarity: Crucial high-pitched sounds (the exact sounds needed to distinguish consonants and understand speech) were barely amplified at all.

This is a common issue in the industry. Computer software relies on generic averages, but no ear canal is average.

The “Gold Standard” Fix & Outcome Measures
To fix this, we performed Manual Real-Ear Measurements (REMs). This process involves placing a tiny microphone inside the ear canal to measure exactly how the hearing aid performs in the patient’s unique ear.
Instead of guessing, we adjusted the sound manually to match his precise prescription. We then tested his hearing using realistic background noise simulations.
The switch to this gold-standard method completely transformed his results:

  • Proven Clarity: In heavy background noise, his speech understanding crosses the critical 50% mark, allowing him to piece together full sentences easily using visual and context cues.
  • No More Overwhelm: Most importantly, the patient shared that noisy rooms are no longer overwhelming and speech is finally clear.

Get the Most Out of Your Technology
Premium hearing aids require premium care to work properly. When precise manual adjustments are paired with brain-training tools like the LACE AI Pro app – which this patient used to further sharpen his skills, and uncomfortable background noise becomes manageable again.
If you are investing in your hearing health, ensure your provider uses gold-standard verification and outcome measures like speech discrimination tests. This is the only way to turn advanced technology into life-changing outcomes.
