How the right hearing assessment transformed one patient’s quality of life

“I have my life back now”

For many people, getting hearing aids is supposed to be the solution. But what happens when they don’t seem to work as expected?

Recently, I saw an 81-year-old patient who came to us feeling frustrated and isolated, despite wearing hearing aids every day for the past two years. The hearing aids she was using had been supplied and fitted elsewhere.

Her words were simple, but powerful:

“Everything sounds muffled.”

She avoided restaurants, struggled to follow conversations with family and relied heavily on lip-reading. Phone calls had become difficult and social situations were increasingly exhausting.

Most upsetting of all, she had begun to withdraw from the moments that matter most.

The problem wasn’t her hearing aids – it was how they were working for her

When we carried out a full hearing assessment, we confirmed she had a moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears, which is common as we get older.

But the most important part of her assessment wasn’t just measuring what she could hear in silence – it was understanding how well she could hear speech in real-world situations, especially with background noise.

We tested her hearing both without hearing aids and with her existing devices.

The results showed clearly why she was struggling: although her hearing aids made sounds louder, they weren’t helping her brain understand speech clearly – particularly in noisy environments.

This is something we see more often than people realise.

Hearing aids need to be carefully programmed and verified for each individual person. Without this precision, patients may still struggle, even if they’re wearing their devices correctly.

A personalised approach made all the difference

After discussing her lifestyle, hearing needs and expectations, we fitted her with new hearing aids selected specifically to improve speech clarity, comfort and performance in noise.

We also used Real Ear Measurements – a gold standard verification method – to ensure the hearing aids were programmed accurately for her ears.

This ensures the hearing aids are not just amplifying sound, but helping the brain understand speech more clearly.

The result: clearer hearing and renewed confidence

At her follow-up appointment, we repeated the same speech understanding tests.

The improvement was dramatic.

But more importantly, her experience in everyday life had changed completely.

She told me:

“I have my life back now, Christina.”

She was able to enjoy conversations again. Social situations were no longer exhausting. She felt more confident, more connected and more like herself.

Why this matters if you already wear hearing aids

Many people assume that if they have hearing aids and still struggle, nothing more can be done.

But that’s often not true.

With the right assessment, careful programming and appropriate technology, hearing can often be improved significantly – even if you’ve worn hearing aids for years.

If your hearing aids don’t feel like they’re helping as much as they should, it may not be your hearing that’s the problem – it may be that your hearing aids need specialist optimisation.
