Are All Hearing Aids The Same?

Hearing aid technology has greatly advanced, and because of the leaps in technology, there are many options for users. It can be overwhelming to choose the right hearing aid. So, it begs the question, are all hearing aids are the same?

No, they are not, as many things separate each hearing aid style. Sometimes the difference may be small, but they are important to consider. Let’s explore a few of the features you may or may not be interested in when shopping for hearing aids.

Hearing Aid Type

There are three main types of hearing aids, they include:

Behind-the-Ear

Behind-the-ear hearing aids loop around your ear. They are not overly bulky, but behind-the-ear hearing aids can be more noticeable. These devices are most often associated with older models of hearing aids we grew up seeing our grandparents wear.

In the Ear Devices

In-the-ear devices are placed just inside the opening of the ear, similar to an earplug. These devices are practically invisible to others but still accessible to charge and remove when not needed or wanted.

In the Canal

In-the-canal hearing aids are extremely small and just about invisible; some models can even stay in the ear for an extended period without charging or replacing batteries.

Additional Features

Besides advances in style, hearing aids come with several features. Hearing aids can have features like:

  • Noise reduction
  • Directional microphones
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Telecoils
  • Wireless connectivity such as Bluetooth for phone calls or music listening
  • Remote controls
  • Direct audio input
  • Variable programming
  • Synchronisation

Ease of Use

Some types of hearing aids are easier to use than others, for example:

  • In-the-ear hearing aids are really small and can be difficult to manipulate. If you have trouble gripping small things, you may want to reconsider this style of hearing aid.
  • If you aren’t tech-savvy, you may not enjoy hearing aids with many extra features, as these can sometimes be tricky.

Life of the Hearing Aid

Consider your lifestyle when shopping for hearing aids and the life of a hearing aid. Certain types of hearing aids may be tougher than others, for example:

  • Behind-the-ear hearing aids tend to last longer than in-the-ear or in-the-canal hearing aids.
  • In-the-ear and in-the-canal hearing aids can get messed up because of dirt and ear wax. The behind-the-ear devices don’t have that problem.

Have Fun Shopping

Sure, not all hearing aids are the same, but hearing the world around you will be a considerable improvement regardless of which one you pick. Happy hearing!
